INSTRUCTIONS

For this task, we are told to express in a typographical way one of the 3 texts of the Editorial Texts that was given. We had to design it in a 2-page editorial spread of 200mm x 200mm per page by using the previous 10 typefaces that was given. Though no images and colors were allowed, some minor graphical elements like lines and shades are permissible. Using Adobe InDesign was mainly to edit the text layout, and using Adobe Illustrator was used to edit/design the headline as optional.

1. Research

I chose the second text 'A code to build on and live by' as it enlightens me on a new aspect about being a designer in a community and I believe more people should understand their responsibilities whether they are a designer or not.

The headline gave me an idea on making the text seem as if it was a layout of buildings, or that it may seem like it was stacking up. Searching for any other inspirations, I tried to find something that was special or eye catching so that I could start up.

2. Sketch

The first few sketches were more creative and hardcore than I intended it to be, and as I thought, it was disapproved. Ms. Vi had said I was trying and thinking way too hard on it and that I should try to go more simple than I should have.

After I tried to tone it down a bit, I felt the sheer differences between the two. I was not quite sure with it on paper or as sketches, so then I went on to digitalize it.

3. Digitalized

The initial designs were as the same as the sketches. I wanted to have a little bit of fun, although in doing so I went a little bit overboard once again. Ms. Vi had said that there were no flow with the headlines. When putting the blocks over the text, I could tell there were no flow, and it does seem difficult to read from which end to another.

After adjusting the layouts, I decided to remove the first layout from the initial designs, and kept the other three, for layout #2 and #4, I wanted to create a dark theme and a light theme for both, as I had seen previous students done it themselves and it was pleasing to my sensitive eyes. I also wanted to add in morse codes in the text as I thought it would add more little details to the layouts.

Seeing the blocks over the texts made the layouts seemed easier to read now.

I chose layout #4 and #5 as my finals as it had the look of buildings/city lights as I initially intended to design, although the first two layouts seemed more fitting to 'build', comparing between the other two, it felt less complete than the last two.

FEEDBACK

Week 6:
I was thinking way too hard during the initial designs.

Week 7:
There were no flow with the headlines/titles. Should avoid increase in spaces between the words.

REFLECTIONS

While doing the task, I noticed the final works did not look as complex as the effort that were put into it. Spending hours to see the small differences with the many small adjustments to see which one was the better one is a designer's number one enemy. Although during this task, I have to honestly say I went with my guts and did not do many research for it, as I thought it would just come to me after looking through previous students' works and other peoples' designs online, which in the end, had become a jinx for me as I struggled while doing the task.

I had made the mistakes of underestimating how easy this task would be once again. Being a designer takes a great eye to see and make something that is both pleasing and accurate, a skill I must never take for granted.
