Weekly activity:
For the weekly tutorial activity, we followed a Youtube tutorial of  VFX editing in class on Adobe After Effects under the supervision of our tutor to understand how the tools work and get an idea on how we need to add the VFX on our final assignment.

For this project, we are divided into groups of 2 and had to come up with a short video using visual effects, based on a given theme from the tarot cards. The video had to tell a simple but strong story using voice over, music and sound effects. our story had to be specific based on the given theme. Before starting the filming, we were asked to fill ip a project proposal which included the basic information, synopsis, storyboard, rough brief of the scenes, musics that are used, VFS tutorials and get it approved by our tutor. Once this was done, we proceeded to the shooting and then the compilation and editing on Adobe Premiere Pro, later adding the VFX using After Effects. Then to add in the voice over and the music. Lastly, the final video was to be uploaded on Youtube for submission.

After the proposal was accepted, we started working on the production phase. The first challahge we faced was finding a suitable empty venue where we can shoot our scenes. it took a long time to get the arrangement for the location that matched out story. Once the location got finalized, we figured out setting up the lighting properly. as we wanted the scenes to look clear. After many tries, we finally managed to complete our first shoot. However, after reviewing it from Mr. Martin, he gave us feedbacks accordingly and mentioned that the shooting quality and storyline were not strong enough and would not work well for a one minute video. He gave us a few suggestions and asked us to redo the entire shoot.

After the feedback, we started making changes in the storyline and the storyboard. We simplified some scenes, added new ideas and removed parts that were not working. Once the new storyboard was ready, we started the shooting process again, this time more carefully. The second shoot went smoother because we had learned from our previous mistake.

After completing the shooting, we moved on to the editing phase. We used Premiere Pro firstly to arrange the clips according to the updated storyboard, applied color correction to improve the visual quality and made a few adjustments to make the story flow better and look appealing.

After that, we exported the project to After Effects, whee we added visual effects and overlay effects using tutorials from Youtube. Such as dissipating/scattering effect for the transformation, add in keylight and glow effect for the butterfly to emerge more prettily, and gaussian blur effect to make the scene looks less sharp and more in tune with each other. These effects helped enhance the overall look and feel of the video.

Finally, it was my part in adding the music, voice-over, and sound effects to make the video in its final stage. For this part I used Adobe Audition to record my voice and reverb it to make it sound more in tune with the surrounding by using studio reverb and pitch shifter. Then after that I placed the audios in the video by using Premiere Pro once again.

After several rounds of improvements, we completed the final video and uploaded it on Youtube for submission.

REFLECTIONS

For this final project, it was a hectic struggle for the weeks that come with it. Although the planning may seem easy, create a scenario, finalize it, find a location, shoot, edit, edit again, add in audio, etc, it was actually harder than it was written down for a two men job. The idea and concept was fun for me, I actually enjoyed doing the whole shooting and editing process. Especially the storyboard part, I've came up with that part and honestly I lam glad we could follow through. However, it was such a struggle in finding a remote location of an auditorium with perfect lighting.

But in the end, we managed to do it together for the shooting and getting our desired shots. After I did my editing part in Premiere Pro, with the color correction and audio dubbing, I felt much more confident in our final product. And it turns out well after the VFX.  I actually look great, despite myself feeling embarrassed. Then again, this project has taught me about fear and overcoming it, even though there were no actual people in the auditorium, I still felt nervous in acting throughout this project, but it also felt great in the end, I've gotten some confidence in performing and feeling less shy as a person. So I'm grateful for this experience.
